Are There Good and Bad Times to Start a Diet?

Naturally we all have our own opinions as to when it is a good or bad time to embark on a new diet and fitness regime. Many of us believe that after Christmas or the beginning of the New Year is a good place to begin. Others plan a new regime just before the summer holiday season, when we are most likely to be wearing less clothes, it is easy to disguise our weight in the winter months. Disregarding seasons and the time of year, there are still certain times when we should be wary of starting a new diet and fitness programme.
- Stress can be very detrimental to a new diet plan.
If we are in a very stressful state of mind, perhaps due to employment commitments or within our home, family or personal relationships, then to begin a diet or fitness programme may not be the best idea. If we are bogged down by problems and our stress levels are high, we cannot give 100% commitment and concentrate to a new lifestyle change. In order to achieve optimum success we have to be fully focused and totally committed to our new diet and fitness regime. It can be very difficult to summon up this dedication when we are distracted by outside influences.
- Illness can affect our diet.
It is very difficult to summon up any enthusiasm to count calories and exercise when we do not feel well. Dieting will not bring about any problems if we just have a slight cold, but achieving any form of motivation often proves difficult. Another down side of feeling under the weather is that quite often we feel sorry for ourselves and we sometimes feel the need to comfort eat, craving foods we know are detrimental to our diet. Instead of battling against our willpower, it is much more beneficial to focus on getting better, enabling us concentrate fully on our diet when we are well.
- Important commitments often interfere.
Sometimes outside influences may also interfere with our diet. Perhaps we have a busy schedule organising a party or some other event. Maybe we had hoped to shed a few pounds before hand, but trying to stick to a diet when our mind is on so many other things is almost impossible. By trying to balance what we eat we may be able to shed a couple of pounds quickly. We could try increasing water consumption and reducing salt and sugar intake, these are only minute alterations but can often offer a quick fix solution.
- Vacation inspiration.
Sometimes we decide to begin a new diet and fitness programme when a vacation is looming. Sometimes it is to improve our body for our new swimsuit, sometimes we think that if we have lost a few pounds before our holiday, then we can afford to eat sensibly and not gain more weight than before we started. This can often end in failure as it is difficult watching others enjoying delicious food, whilst we are trying to diet, or we just give up the diet completely.
The best way to achieve optimum results when we begin a new diet is:
When we feel we can commit fully, with a calm stress free mind set. When our life is such that we have the time and patience to prepare healthy, nutritious food, and we are not anticipating any major changes in our life or daily routine in the near future. Last but not least, we have no health problems to distract us from our ultimate goal.
