Walking for weight loss is a great way to lose weight after pregnancy. After I had my first baby, all I could think about was how to lose belly fat fast.
Well, it started with walking. Lo, and behold, walking helped me lose 46 pounds in 7 months.
I'm one of those types of people that if the exercise isn't tough enough, there's no way that I am going to lose weight. But, right after having Lucas, I couldn't run right away. My body wasn't ready, and Lucas wasn't old enough to tolerate the jogging motion in the running stroller yet. So, I started with what I could do.
Start Slow
What I did do was start off slow. I started walking for 20 minutes a day. I'd just put Lucas in the jogging stroller, and off we'd go.
Then, I increased the time to 30 minutes. After my body got used to that, I increased to 45 minutes. Then, I finally started walking for an hour everyday.
It was a great feeling to exercise to burn fat. I was re-conditioning my body after pregnancy. I was getting back into shape.
Increasing Caloric Burn
I was also building muscles back into my legs. Increased muscles helps with caloric burn. Higher caloric burn means more weight loss. Well, as long as you're not taking in more calories than you are burning.
When you walk for the first 20 minutes, your body burns both carbohydrates and fat. After the 20 minute threshold, your body burns mostly fat. Exercising longer than 20 minutes is a great reason to get your body into the fat burning phase.
Start with What You Can
Too often, we want to set these high lofty goals. "I'm going to walk for an hour everyday."
But then, something happens, and we can't go one day. The next day we think, "Well, I didn't go yesterday, and since I didn't go, I feel bad. I might as well skip today."
And the slope gets slippery, and we quit exercising. The important thing to remember is just to start and commit to what you can do.
Ask yourself, "How likely is it that I am going to walk for an hour everyday?" 25% chance? Maybe start lower.
Ask yourself again, "How likely is it that I am going to walk for 15 minutes everyday?" 90% chance? Start there. Once you build your routine, you can go longer. Increase your time from there.
Give yourself the greatest chance for success by committing to what you know you can do.
You can start walking for weight loss today. All you need to do is set aside some time everyday, or 5-6 days a week, or whatever you can commit to.
Schedule it in your planner, and obey your calendar. You'll find yourself losing all or more of your pregnancy weight, just like I did, with an exercise as simple as walking.
